Are surfboard nose guards really necessary?

Are surfboard nose guards really necessary or do the just look cool?

1. no you do not need them and they dont look cool
2. dont try surfing. it sucks
3. They were a product from the late eighties and early nineties. Think fluro, vanilla ice and oakley blades and you will realise it was an era of useless stuff! Yeah maybe someone somewhere has still got an eye because of one of these babies, but really arent used any more!
4. Sometimes they are and sometimes there not necessary. My friend got his face cut frome the nose of the board because he crashed and the board flipped into his face and he is a good surfer. I would get it so your board doesn't get messed up.
