Beginner longboard/surfboard length?
I am 5'11'' and weigh about 150, what's the general length of a longboard (surfboard, not skateboard) I should look at for someone who's just learning to surf?

- I would recommend something in the 7ft. range. That's a good size for someone of your size and weight. Dude, 5'11" @ 150? And I would start with waves at about the 1'-2' size. Don't get in over your head in the beginning, a 7ft board will make you tired.
- For your size and weight I would go with an 8' fun shape. Custom boards that size run around $700 and you can get off brand boards from the orient for as low at $400. Also, with a fun shape that size you can always sell it when you decide to go smaller or larger.
- Something that is too big might feel a little cumbersome in the water. Look at boards that aren't too long, but also look at the thickness, this is the most important aspect for a beginner, it is what gives you stability.
- EVERYTHING I've ever heard or read (aside from the other responses here) has been to learn with a longboard that's about 3 feet longer than you are tell. Don't buy into that "it's too cumbersome" because that's not true. When I learned I was 6'0" 160lbs and used a 9 foot soft top long board. The shorter the board you use the "harder" it will be to learn (oh and it's the width that gives the stability, not the thickness)
- Maybe about a ten footer
